Overview

Despite its small size, Connecticut packs a surprising amount of birding diversity into its coastline, river valleys, and upland forests. The Long Island Sound shore provides critical habitat for wintering sea ducks and migrant shorebirds, while inland forests host breeding warblers and the state's growing Bald Eagle population. TrailBird is expanding to cover Connecticut's birding hotspots with live eBird data, trail maps, and seasonal guides.

Seasonal Birding Guide

Warbler migration peaks in mid-May along the coast and river valleys. Shorebirds move through tidal flats.

Breeding Cerulean Warblers and Worm-eating Warblers are found in mature forest tracts. Terns nest on offshore islands.

Hawk migration is strong at coastal watch points like Lighthouse Point. Sparrows fill the coastal scrub.

Long Island Sound hosts scoters, eiders, and Harlequin Ducks. Snowy Owls visit coastal beaches in irruption years.
