Overview

Idaho's varied terrain ranges from the sagebrush steppe of the Snake River Plain to the towering peaks of the Sawtooths and the deep forests of the Idaho Panhandle. Greater Sage-Grouse display on leks in the southern desert, while Harlequin Ducks breed along rushing mountain streams. The Camas Prairie and Bear Lake valley are key migration corridors. TrailBird is expanding to cover Idaho's birding hotspots with live eBird data, trail maps, and seasonal guides.

Seasonal Birding Guide

Sage-Grouse leks are active in March and April. Migrant songbirds fill riparian corridors along the Snake River.

Mountain species like Calliope Hummingbird and Clark's Nutcracker breed at elevation. Harlequin Ducks nest on forest streams.

Sandhill Cranes stage at Grays Lake. Raptors migrate through mountain passes.

Bald Eagles concentrate along open water. Northern species like Bohemian Waxwings visit the panhandle.
