Overview

The Prairie State's mix of Lake Michigan shoreline, prairie remnants, bottomland forests, and the great rivers of the Mississippi and Illinois make it a major player on the Mississippi Flyway. Chicago's lakefront parks are nationally famous for migrant traps, and southern Illinois's Shawnee National Forest harbors breeding warblers more typical of the southern Appalachians. TrailBird is expanding to cover Illinois's birding hotspots with live eBird data, trail maps, and seasonal guides.

Seasonal Birding Guide

Warbler waves hit Chicago's lakefront parks in May. Shorebirds stop at Chautauqua NWR and other wetlands.

Henslow's Sparrows and Dickcissels breed in prairie remnants. Cerulean Warblers nest in southern forests.

Lakefront hawk migration and sparrow flights are highlights. Waterfowl pour into the Illinois River valley.

Bald Eagles gather along the Mississippi. Winter finches visit in irruption years. Snowy Owls appear at lakefront locations.
