Overview

Indiana's position between the Great Lakes and the Ohio River valley gives birders access to a nice mix of northern and southern species. The Indiana Dunes along Lake Michigan are an outstanding migrant trap, while Goose Pond FWA in the southwest has become one of the Midwest's premier shorebird and waterfowl hotspots. TrailBird is expanding to cover Indiana's birding hotspots with live eBird data, trail maps, and seasonal guides.

Seasonal Birding Guide

Indiana Dunes produce excellent warbler migration. Goose Pond FWA hosts thousands of shorebirds.

Cerulean and Hooded Warblers breed in the southern hills. Henslow's Sparrows nest in restored prairies.

Hawk migration along Lake Michigan. Waterfowl numbers build at Goose Pond and Muscatatuck NWR.

Lake Michigan harbors sea ducks and gulls. Southern reservoirs attract loons and grebes.
