Overview

Iowa's rolling agricultural landscape still holds important prairie remnants and wetlands that support grassland species of conservation concern. The Loess Hills along the western border provide unique habitat, while the Mississippi and Missouri River corridors channel migrants and wintering birds through the state. TrailBird is expanding to cover Iowa's birding hotspots with live eBird data, trail maps, and seasonal guides.

Seasonal Birding Guide

Shorebirds fill wetlands across the state. Migrant warblers pass through river corridor forests.

Bobolinks, Dickcissels, and Grasshopper Sparrows breed in remaining prairies. Yellow-headed Blackbirds nest in marshes.

Waterfowl migration builds along both major river corridors. Sparrows fill weedy fields.

Bald Eagles concentrate along the Mississippi. Rough-legged Hawks and Short-eared Owls hunt open farmland.
