Overview

Louisiana sits at the northern edge of the Gulf of Mexico, making it the first landfall for billions of neotropical migrants crossing the water each spring. The chenier woods of Cameron Parish are legendary for massive fallouts of warblers, tanagers, and orioles. The Atchafalaya Basin is the largest contiguous swamp in the U.S., teeming with wading birds, woodpeckers, and Prothonotary Warblers. TrailBird is expanding to cover Louisiana's birding hotspots with live eBird data, trail maps, and seasonal guides.

Seasonal Birding Guide

Trans-Gulf migrants make landfall at coastal chenier woods. Cameron Parish fallouts can produce dozens of warbler species in a single morning.

Roseate Spoonbills and nesting herons fill coastal rookeries. Swallow-tailed Kites sail over the Atchafalaya.

Southbound shorebirds pack coastal marshes. Hummingbird banding stations draw crowds hoping for western rarities.

Millions of waterfowl winter in coastal marshes. Sparrows and kinglets fill the chenier woods.
