Overview

Maine is the gateway to the boreal forest in the eastern United States, with spruce-fir habitats reaching down to sea level and harboring species like Spruce Grouse, Black-backed Woodpecker, and Boreal Chickadee. The coast supports nesting Atlantic Puffins on offshore islands and spectacular seabird diversity. Acadia National Park is one of the Northeast's top birding destinations. TrailBird is expanding to cover Maine's birding hotspots with live eBird data, trail maps, and seasonal guides.

Seasonal Birding Guide

Boreal species begin singing in the north woods. Warbler migration peaks along the coast in late May.

Atlantic Puffins and other alcids nest on Machias Seal Island and Eastern Egg Rock. Boreal breeders are at their most vocal.

Hawk migration is excellent at coastal sites. Rare seabirds pass offshore during storms.

Sea ducks and alcids winter along the coast. Irruptive finches visit in good years. Snowy Owls appear at coastal sites.
