Overview

Michigan's unique geography gives it more Great Lakes coastline than any other state, funneling migrants along its shorelines and creating world-class birding opportunities. The state is the primary breeding ground for the endangered Kirtland's Warbler, and Whitefish Point Bird Observatory on Lake Superior is one of the top hawk migration sites in the Midwest. TrailBird is expanding to cover Michigan's birding hotspots with live eBird data, trail maps, and seasonal guides.

Seasonal Birding Guide

Hawk and owl migration at Whitefish Point peaks in April. Warbler waves hit lakefront parks in May.

Kirtland's Warblers sing from jack pine stands. Piping Plovers nest on Great Lakes beaches. Common Loons breed in the Upper Peninsula.

Hawk migration at Detroit River and Lake Erie Metropark. Waterbird flights along the Great Lakes are spectacular.

Snowy Owls and winter raptors along the lakeshore. Northern owls and finches visit in irruption years.
