Overview

Nebraska is best known for the awe-inspiring Sandhill Crane staging along the Platte River each March, but the state offers far more for birders. The Sandhills grasslands in the north are one of the most intact prairie ecosystems in North America, while the Pine Ridge escarpment in the northwest brings western montane species east. TrailBird is expanding to cover Nebraska's birding hotspots with live eBird data, trail maps, and seasonal guides.

Seasonal Birding Guide

Over half a million Sandhill Cranes stage on the Platte River in March. Greater Prairie-Chickens and Sharp-tailed Grouse dance on leks.

Breeding Long-billed Curlews and Upland Sandpipers nest in the Sandhills. Western species reach their eastern limits in the Pine Ridge.

Whooping Cranes pass through on their way south. Waterfowl migration builds along the Platte and Rainwater Basin.

Rough-legged Hawks and Northern Harriers hunt the open prairies. Bald Eagles gather at reservoirs.
