Birding in Rhode Island

The Ocean State may be the smallest, but its Narragansett Bay coastline and Block Island deliver big birding, especially during fall migration.

Overview

Rhode Island makes up for its small size with an outstanding coastline and Block Island, one of the top vagrant traps on the East Coast. Fall migration on Block Island routinely produces rare western and southern species, and the Narragansett Bay shore hosts wintering sea ducks and loons in excellent numbers. TrailBird is expanding to cover Rhode Island's birding hotspots with live eBird data, trail maps, and seasonal guides.

Seasonal Birding Guide

Warbler migration along the coast. Shorebirds fill Narragansett Bay mudflats.

Breeding Saltmarsh Sparrows in coastal marshes. Terns nest at coastal colonies.

Block Island is a top-tier vagrant trap during October. Rarities turn up annually in the island's thickets and hedgerows.

Sea ducks concentrate in Narragansett Bay. Harlequin Ducks winter at rocky headlands. Snowy Owls visit coastal areas.
