Wisconsin is where the boreal forest meets the prairie, where Whooping Cranes fly once again, and where two Great Lakes shorelines create some of the Midwest's finest birding.
Overview
Wisconsin's position between Lake Michigan and Lake Superior, combined with its mix of boreal forest, agricultural land, and remnant prairies, makes it one of the most rewarding birding states in the Midwest. The state is home to the only wild migratory population of Whooping Cranes east of the Rocky Mountains, thanks to ongoing reintroduction efforts. The Horicon Marsh in the southeast is one of the largest freshwater cattail marshes in the United States, supporting vast numbers of waterfowl and marsh birds. The northern third of the state is covered in mixed and boreal forest, where birders can find Connecticut Warblers, Spruce Grouse, and Black-backed Woodpeckers. The Apostle Islands on Lake Superior host nesting Piping Plovers and are a gateway to boreal species. The Driftless Area in the southwest, unglaciated and deeply carved by rivers, supports unique forest and grassland habitats. Seasonal Birding Guide
Warbler migration fills the lakefront parks of Milwaukee and Door County in May. Sandhill Cranes and Whooping Cranes return to the central grasslands. Shorebirds stop at Lake Michigan coastal wetlands, and loons return to northern lakes. Greater Prairie-Chicken leks are active on the Buena Vista Grasslands.
Boreal breeders like Connecticut Warbler, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, and Spruce Grouse are found in the northern forests. Kirtland's Warblers have recently established breeding territories. Marshes host Yellow-headed Blackbirds, rails, and bitterns. The Apostle Islands support nesting seabirds and rare Piping Plovers.
Horicon Marsh fills with hundreds of thousands of geese and ducks. Hawk migration along the Lake Michigan shore is excellent, particularly at Concordia University and Cedar Grove. Sparrow diversity peaks in the prairies and field edges. Late fall brings northern owls and finches southward into the state.
Lake Michigan's western shore hosts wintering Long-tailed Ducks, scoters, and Snowy Owls. Northern Wisconsin produces Great Gray Owls, Northern Hawk Owls, and Boreal Owls in good irruption years. Winter finch flights bring redpolls, Pine Grosbeaks, and Evening Grosbeaks to feeders. Bald Eagles concentrate along open-water stretches of major rivers.
